This poem was identified as the UK's "most popular post-war poem" in a poll by the BBC, and was the inspiration for Sue Ellen Copper who founded the 'Red Hat Society',largest women's social group in the world.

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me,
